Articles Written Outside the Organization Accepted
We Need You
We are currently looking for external submissions for our fall edition. The theme will be "Education" but we are accepting articles beyond the scope of this edition’s theme.

There is no right or wrong topic to write about. Our past editions have featured interviews with surgeons and physicians of various specialities, current events, case reports, editorials, and informative pieces.
Our Team Roles
Managing Editor:
The managing editor is responsible for guiding and directing the team in the direction for each editorial. They coordinate meetings and perform external outreach soliciting submissions and working with writers from Geisinger and outside Geisinger to get their pieces ready for publication in the magazine. Work on developing and implementing new initiatives to enhance each new edition.
Research Opportunities Editor:
It's a great chance to get some face time with a lot of physicians and get to know their story. It is also a great opportunity for publications.
Design Editor:
The Design Editor collects articles and artwork from the rest of the team and compiles them into a final PDF format using Adobe InDesign. Additionally, the Design Editor coordinates with the Managing Editor to ensure all articles are received. All previous publications, articles, images, and InDesign files are to be managed and archived by the Design Editor. After final approval from the Editor-in-Chief, the Design Editor will ensure the publication is posted on the Musculoskeletal Matters website.
Editorials Editor:
The purpose of the position is to expose anyone reading MSK Matters to opportunities for service or good works. Therefore, if you know of any online ways to contribute in this spirit, you could write about that as well. If you have any opportunities that you know of in areas outside of GCSOM, these would be perfectly fine to write about as well.
Current Events Editor:
From there I just take the transcription and turn it into a story. Overall, the time commitment from start to finish is about 2-3 hours over a half semester, which is not a lot.
Institutional Liaison:
The institutional liaison is responsible for outreach and communication to non-Geisinger individuals, organizations, and institutions involved in musculoskeletal health and patient care. This includes but is not limited to residents, fellows, attendings, alumni from Geisinger SOM, and other healthcare students/professionals. My role is to help increase inter-institutional collaboration and diversity to the community that MSK Matters reaches outside of Geisinger, as part of the goals recorded by the 2022-2023 editorial board. Primarily this will involve interviewing individuals with a specific focus on the chosen theme for the newsletter edition. For example, as part of the Exercise & Sports health edition, I chose to interview Sports Medicine faculty and team physicians.
Volunteering Editor:
Work closely with the Community Service Chair of the GCSOM Student Musculoskeletal Society. I reach out every so often to get a feel for what service opportunities there are through SMS. Chief amongst these so far has been our involvement with St Joseph's Center (organized clean ups, concerts for the residents, etc).
Physician Network Editor:
Reach out to one of the physicians in the Geisinger MSK Institute (external institutions are welcome) to ask for their participation. Dr. Seeley usually helps to get the physician on board and bridge the communication. Next, I work with their secretary to set up a good time for a 30 minute Zoom. During that Zoom, I have a pre-made set of questions I ask, but I let the physician tell their story and what is important to them in their specialty and MSK health and in life. I ask to record the session and transcribe the session. From there I just take the transcription and turn it into a story. Overall, the time commitment from start to finish is about 2-3 hours over a half semester, which is not a lot. It's a great chance to get some face time with a lot of physicians and get to know their story. It is also a great opportunity for publications.
If you are interested in getting involved we'd loved to hear from you. We are always happy to evaluate literature and artwork submissions for publication! Please contact us if you would like to learn more about becoming a campus coordinator.
